Description

Americans have been shocked in recent years to learn of potentially deadly delays in care for veterans at VA facilities throughout the US. Just as disturbing has been the realization that VA administrators were not only aware of the delays, but also actively and illegally disguising the problem in pursuit of personal financial gain. Very few Americans, however, have ever guessed at the true, chilling breadth of what is happening within the Veterans Health Administration.

Mission Betrayed sheds a harsh light on the toxic, destructive reality of the modern VHA. Going well beyond the delayed appointments of the VA Waitlist Scandal of 2014, it documents even more alarming impacts of a system propped up on deceptive statistics and a carefully crafted concealment of the mediocrity, indifference, and malice that have persisted despite a much publicized “transformation” of the VA in response to Congressional demands for reform in the 1980s and ‘90s. Filled with real life stories of veterans who have been needlessly harmed or killed, the book exposes the system’s desperate desire both to maintain and to disguise the shocking truth behind its present day appearance.

Mission Betrayed chronicles the unnecessary neglect and suffering being inflicted upon American veterans by the VHA. Its author is a Princeton/Stanford-educated and Harvard-trained surgeon, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, one of the country’s top medical schools, and was the leader of a surgical program at the VA for many years until his disillusioned departure in 2011. The book carefully documents that the Waitlist Scandal was nothing more than a reflection of the way everything is managed in that monolithic institution. And that when an entire, badly broken healthcare system boils down to the generation and worship of a few dramatically misleading statistics, the disheartening result is not only a danger zone for our unsung heroes, but the violation of one of our nation’s most important promises to a deserving, underserved population.
